Commentary

S. japonicum causes a disease that is very similar to the one caused by S. mansoni. It may be more severe, however, due to the production of a greater number of eggs. In S. japonicum, animal reservoirs may be a significant factor, whereas in S. mansoni animal reservoirs are not a significant factor, see S. mansoni.
