Dear Class of 2010:
Supporting your spring medical missions is important to me. They serve many good purposes. They deliver needed medical care to those without access. They enable you to gain some clinical experience. They help all of us realize how blessed we are in our comfortable lives where we often take health for granted and hopefully motivate us to give to the less fortunate near and far.
I suffer from my excess – I need to lose about 40 pounds. Rather than having a ping-pong tournament as a fundraiser for your missions, I will make a wager with you. I would like to lose 20 pounds from the start of MMID to your final exam. I will give your collective mission funds $100 for every pound less than the 20 pound weight loss. I will invite my faculty colleagues to join in this wager.
Losing weight is never easy. Now you are my “weight watchers”! I will keep you posted of my progress on at least a weekly basis. By the way, as a result to too much college football munching over the past couple of weekends, I’m actually up a couple of pounds!
Don’t worry – if by some miracle I meet my goal, I’ll still make a decent donation. Now, I don’t want candy bars and sweets showing up in my mailbox or by my office or lunch invitations from your class!
