10/8 Correction from Dr. Bloom's spoken comments during the enterovirus lecture (he apparently reversed comments regarding viral vs. bacterial meningitis - the handout and PowerPoint are correct):
A differential sign for diagnosing aseptic (viral) meningitis from bacterial meningitis is that for bacterial meningitis the CSF glucose tends to be decreased, whereas for viral meningitis it is NORMAL. In addition, bacterial meningitis is often associated with neutrophils in the CSF. Only rarely are neutrophils seen in viral meningitis (and usually only occurs within the first 48 hours of a viral infection). There are other differential characteristics (e.g., protein levels) which will be covered in more detail later in the course.
